Game, Set… Ouch? Why Wimbledon Fever Can Lead to Tennis Elbow

Wimbledon

Wimbledon season is in full swing, and there’s nothing like watching the world’s best battle it out on Centre Court to make you want to dust off your old tennis racquet and head to the court. At Aberdeen Osteopathy Clinic, we absolutely love seeing people get active—but it’s worth remembering that your body might not be quite as match-fit as Djokovic or Swiatek.

Every summer, around 15–20% of recreational players experience symptoms of tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)—a painful condition caused by overuse of the muscles and tendons in the forearm. It’s especially common among those who pick up a racquet after months (or years!) away from the game and jump straight into long, intense sessions.

What Is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow is an inflammation or micro-tearing of the tendons that join the forearm muscles to the outside of the elbow. It often causes pain when lifting, gripping, or twisting—especially during activities like:

  • Serving or hitting backhand shots

  • Carrying heavy bags

  • Typing or using tools

How Can You Avoid It?

If Wimbledon has inspired you to get active, here are some simple steps to stay injury-free:

  • Warm up and stretch before playing

  • Start slowly – ease back into the game over a few weeks

  • Use proper technique and equipment (a stiff racquet or old grip can make things worse)

  • Rest between sessions to let your body recover

Already Feeling the Twinge?

If you’re experiencing elbow pain after playing, don’t ignore it. Osteopathy can help relieve symptoms, improve mobility, and get you back on the court faster. At Aberdeen Osteopathy Clinic, we offer hands-on treatment and tailored rehab exercises to address the root cause of the issue—not just the symptoms.

Book an appointment today and let’s make sure your summer of sport stays injury-free.

Oh, by the way! You don’t have to be a tennis player to get tennis elbow! DIY, typing, or even gardening can all be culprits. If it hurts, we can help.
