How Much Does an Osteopath Cost in Aberdeen?

An osteopathy first visit at Aberdeen Osteopathy Clinic, including consultation, costs £80, and continuing treatment appointments cost £70. You do not need a GP referral to book privately, and the clinic is covered by major health insurers. This guide explains what is included in that price, what affects osteopathy fees more generally, and how insurance and referrals work.

What affects the cost of an osteopath appointment?
Fees for osteopathy vary across the UK, in part because of where a clinic is based, according to the General Osteopathic Council. Whether an appointment is a first visit or continuing treatment also affects the price, since a first visit includes a full consultation and typically takes longer than a follow-up. Some clinics also offer reduced rates for particular groups, such as students; ours does, as shown above.
Rather than quote a single UK-wide figure, which varies considerably between clinics and does not tell you much about what you would actually pay, we would rather point you to our own current price list. Always check a clinic's prices directly before booking; ours is above, and the latest figures are always kept up to date on our prices page.
What's included in your first osteopathy visit?
According to the General Osteopathic Council, a first appointment generally lasts about 45 minutes to an hour. It typically includes:
- a discussion of your symptoms, general health and any medication
- a physical examination, including simple movements to assess your posture and mobility
- a hands-on assessment of the affected joints, muscles and tissues
- an explanation of what your osteopath has found, and a discussion of a suitable treatment plan
Follow-up, continuing treatment appointments are usually shorter, and generally focus on reviewing how you have responded to treatment and continuing with hands-on work where it is appropriate. You can read more about the osteopathy treatments on offer at the clinic.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no fixed answer. According to the General Osteopathic Council, it is not unusual for more than one visit to be needed before a problem is resolved, and your osteopath should review your progress and agree any changes to the plan with you at each appointment. Your osteopath will discuss a treatment plan, including how many further sessions might help, at your first visit, rather than commit to a fixed number in advance.
Is osteopathy covered by private health insurance?
Aberdeen Osteopathy Clinic is covered by Aviva, WPA and Cigna. Let the clinic know when you book if you plan to claim on your policy. If you have private health insurance with any provider, the General Osteopathic Council advises checking directly with your insurer about your level of cover, whether you need a referral from your GP or a specialist before you claim, and whether your osteopath is recognised by that insurer. Insurers can also differ in whether they cover a first consultation, continuing treatment, or both, so it is worth checking the details of your specific policy before your appointment rather than assuming full cover.
Do I need a GP referral to see an osteopath privately in Aberdeen?
No. Most patients self-refer to an osteopath, and a GP referral is not necessary to book privately, according to the General Osteopathic Council. This is separate from any referral your insurer might ask for if you plan to claim the cost back; check that with them directly.
When to see your GP instead
If your symptoms are severe, getting worse, or you are unsure what is causing them, see your GP before booking a private appointment. Your osteopath will also check for anything that needs medical investigation and refer you on if needed.

Frequently asked questions
How much does an osteopath charge per hour?
At Aberdeen Osteopathy Clinic, osteopathy is priced per appointment rather than per hour: £80 for a first visit including consultation, and £70 for continuing treatment.
Are osteopaths worth going to?
That depends on your problem. Osteopathy may help with conditions such as back pain, uncomplicated neck pain and minor sports injuries, and your osteopath should tell you honestly at your first visit whether it is likely to help you.
Is osteopathy covered by the NHS?
Mostly, osteopathy is a private service, though some NHS-funded osteopathic treatment is available in certain areas, according to the General Osteopathic Council. Ask your GP or, in Scotland, your local health board, whether that applies where you live.
Does the first visit price include the consultation?
Yes. At Aberdeen Osteopathy Clinic, the £80 first visit fee includes the consultation, so there is no separate consultation charge to budget for.
